This policy establishes the principles, standards, and procedures that guide our commitment to protecting children from all forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, violence, discrimination, and harm.

Child protection is everyone's responsibility.

Our child protection approach is guided by the following principles:

Best Interests of the Child

Every decision made by the organization will prioritize the safety, wellbeing, dignity, and development of the child.

Non-Discrimination

Every child shall receive equal protection regardless of disability, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, language, nationality, social status, or economic background.

Participation

Children should be encouraged to express their views and participate in decisions affecting them in ways appropriate to their age and ability.

Accountability

All staff and representatives are accountable for safeguarding children and reporting concerns immediately.

Confidentiality

Information relating to children will be handled confidentially and shared only where necessary to protect the child or comply with legal obligations.

For the purposes of this policy, a child is any person under the age of 18 years, regardless of nationality, disability, gender, or legal status.

Reach & Touch Charity Initiative recognizes all forms of abuse, including but not limited to:

Physical Abuse

Any act causing physical harm or injury. Examples include hitting, slapping, burning, shaking, beating, poisoning, and physical restraint causing harm.

Emotional or Psychological Abuse

Behaviour that negatively affects a child's emotional wellbeing. Examples include humiliation, bullying, threats, intimidation, constant criticism, rejection, and isolation.

Sexual Abuse

Any sexual activity involving a child, including sexual assault, exploitation, grooming, sexual harassment, child pornography, and online exploitation. Any sexual relationship between an adult and a child is prohibited under all circumstances.

Neglect

Failure to provide for a child's basic needs, including food, shelter, medical care, education, supervision, and emotional support.

Exploitation

Using children for personal or financial gain, including child labour, human trafficking, forced begging, and commercial exploitation.

Online Abuse

Including cyberbullying, online grooming, sharing inappropriate images, digital exploitation, and exposure to harmful content.

Everyone representing Reach & Touch Charity Initiative must:

• Treat every child with dignity and respect
• Promote inclusion and equality
• Use appropriate language
• Maintain professional boundaries
• Obtain appropriate consent before activities
• Respect children's privacy
• Report safeguarding concerns immediately
• Follow organizational safeguarding procedures

Staff and Volunteers Must Never:

• Hit or physically punish a child
• Humiliate or verbally abuse a child
• Be alone with a child in inappropriate settings
• Develop inappropriate relationships
• Exchange personal gifts for favours
• Communicate privately with children through personal social media
• Share inappropriate photographs
• Engage in any sexual behaviour involving a child
• Use discriminatory language
• Ignore safeguarding concerns

Reach & Touch Charity Initiative follows safer recruitment practices, including interviews, reference checks, identity verification, background screening where legally permitted, child safeguarding declarations, Code of Conduct agreement, and safeguarding induction.

No individual may work directly with children without completing the organization's safeguarding requirements.

All staff and volunteers receive appropriate safeguarding training covering child protection principles, recognizing abuse, reporting concerns, appropriate behaviour, professional boundaries, digital safeguarding, and disability-sensitive safeguarding. Training is refreshed regularly.

Every safeguarding concern must be reported immediately. Concerns may include suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, inappropriate behaviour, policy breaches, or unsafe environments.

Reports may be made by staff, volunteers, beneficiaries, parents, caregivers, community members, or partners. No concern is too small to report.

When concerns arise, the organization will take every report seriously, prioritize the child's safety, record information accurately, maintain confidentiality, conduct appropriate investigations, cooperate with law enforcement where required, support affected children and families, and take disciplinary action where necessary.

Information relating to safeguarding concerns will only be shared with individuals who need the information to protect the child or comply with legal requirements. The privacy and dignity of children will always be respected.

Photographs and videos involving children must respect children's dignity, never be exploitative, be age-appropriate, protect children's identities where necessary, and be taken only with appropriate consent from parents or legal guardians, except where otherwise permitted by law. Images must never expose children to unnecessary risk.

Digital safeguarding includes secure online meetings, safe communication platforms, protection of children's personal information, monitoring online interactions, preventing cyberbullying, and protecting digital records.

Board of Trustees

Responsible for governance oversight, safeguarding leadership, policy approval, and risk management.

Chief Executive Officer

Responsible for policy implementation, organizational culture, resource allocation, and compliance.

Managers

Responsible for supervising staff, monitoring compliance, supporting reporting, and ensuring training.

Staff and Volunteers

Responsible for following this policy, protecting children, reporting concerns, and maintaining professional behaviour.

Failure to comply with this policy may result in disciplinary action, suspension, termination of employment or volunteer engagement, removal from organizational activities, and reporting to relevant authorities where required. Serious violations may result in criminal prosecution.

This policy will be reviewed at least once every two years, or sooner if required due to legislative changes, emerging safeguarding risks, organizational growth, lessons learned from incidents, or best practice developments.
